Adopt A School

The NGO Educational Trust is promoting the Adopt a School project, bringing together the countryside and the classroom.

If you are interested in adopting a school then the NGO Educational Trust can help in a number of ways, including advice and guidance on working with children, example paperwork and what activities are beneficial for school children's development.

What is Expected

The Adopt a School project typically expects the estate or farm to facilitate 3 or 4 visits per year in order to generate a close relationship. The estate or farm may also consider visiting the school itself.

In order to make the most productive use of time it is advisable to visit the school and meet with the teacher(s) to discuss what activities and demonstrations will appeal to the schoolchildren and meet the needs of the education curriculum.

Adopt a School

What you can offer

The Adopt a School project offers a great opportunity to estates or farms to bring the countryside to life for children and relate what happens on the estate or farm to the national curriculum, especially in science and geography .

For instance your knowledge of science can teach children about:

  • food chains
  • habitats
  • classification of animals

and in geography you can demonstrate:

  • management of landscapes & habitats
  • the effects of seasonal changes in weather
  • how human processes cause changes to the environment.

...and so much more.

Staying Safe

Keeping safe on the estate or farm is a high priority for all. With schoolchildren on site it is vital that all health and safety precautions are taken.

The NGO Educational Trust has prepared some samples of Site Assessments and Activity Assessments to help you get started. The schools will want to be confident that all eventualities have been covered.

Furthermore, the NGO educational Trust's Regional Respresentatives are there to help you get the best out of the relationship between your estate / farm and the local school and community.

Go on...make a child's day...bring the classroom to the countryside!
