2019 Rufus Beldam Bursary Winner Announced

The Rufus Beldam Award for Highest Achieving Gamekeeping Apprentice 2019 was awarded to Samuel Winter of Newton Rigg College. Sam was brought up with the countryside in his Blood, having helped with gamekeeping since he was a youngster, first on West Arkengarthdale, as a toddler helping his dad who has been head keeper there for nearly 30 years, and beating since the age of seven. Ever since those days, he helped as much as he could until leaving school. So, perhaps it was a natural progression to join his father at West Arkengarthdale taking a place on the apprentice scheme at Newton Rigg.

Sam has a good sense of compassion for all wildlife and the countryside. At college he displayed a good knowledge including legislation, which is an integral part of keepering. He also spoke on the local radio about the course. His enthusiasm and dedication is reflected in the high standard of his portfolio.

The course requires apprentices to complete course work and gather evidence, alongside working as a gamekeeper. Since finishing the Newton Rigg apprenticeship scheme, Sam has secured a full-time position at West Arkengarthdale.

It is only with the continued generosity of Mrs. Sharon Beldam and her family that these students are able to receive this Bursary which will be of great benefit to them when they leave college and look for employment in the gamekeeping profession. I am sure that both colleges and students feel
