EDUCATIONAL TRUST REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE IN ACTION

Shayne Dean, the Educational Trust Representative in Kent and head keeper at Lees Court Estate has been very active in the region helping to educate schoolchildren and their teachers about the role of the gamekeeper.

Firstly on June 9th Shayne, his wife Delia and their three boys manned the Trust display at an open farm Sunday on the estate. Over 600 people turned up for tractor rides around the farm and of particular interest were the Grey Partridge rearing pens which are an integral part of a partridge restoration programme taking place on the Estate.

Barton Primary school then visited the estate over two days. Organised through the organisation 'Linking Environment and Farming' whose motto is 'Let Nature feed your Senses' and the estate, 25 children on the first day and 16 on the second were treated to an interesting and informative trip around the estate, Shayne of course was representing the gamekeeping profession.

On 23rd & 24th June two different classes visited from the local Shelwich School. Meeting at the partridge rearing pens they were reminded of the part the school had played earlier in the year when they planted a hedgerow as part of the Grey Partridge Restoration project.

Split into two groups they were then treated to, and actively took part in, gun dog demonstrations, ferret displays and with the help of the estate tractor driver who is also a beekeeper saw the internal workings of a bee hive.

After inspecting the previously mentioned hedge the children then did a comparative insect sweep of the flower rich field margins and the wheat crop.

They then were shown some of the measures used on the estate as part of the essential predator control programme and told the importance of the programme to vulnerable wildlife species.

Separately, Lees Court Estate has held two similar days hosting groups from two Kent charities 'Maidstone Mind' and 'Active Lives'.
